The Economic community of west African states-ECOWAS has imposed sanctions on Niger with the hope to have President Mohamed Bazoum reinstated.

ECOWAS stated on 30th July 2023, the following measures are to be applied with immediate effect: Closure of land and air borders between ECOWAS countries and Niger; Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Niger.
ECOWAS countries resolved to close their borders with Niger until the coup plotters in the country hand over power back to the detained president, Mohamed Bazoum.

The Nigeria Customs Service has joint operations with other security agencies at the border drill and they have been deployed to the border areas to carry out the implementation of the border closure order. The compliance has to be 100 per cent which means that all in-bound and out-bound cargoes in and out of Nigeria will not be allowed during the period of border closure.
